What we collect

Nothing. This page explains what that means, and — more usefully — what it does not mean.

The app

sayyourname.app has no account system, no sign-in and no server of ours. Names, recordings, photos and notes are written to the device that captured them and are not transmitted anywhere.

Because there is no account, there is also nothing to delete on our side, nobody to write to about a security issue, and no way for us to recover anything you lose. Those are real costs of the design and we accepted them on purpose.

Recordings of other people

A voice recording is a biometric identifier under some state laws, including in Illinois, Texas and Washington. The recordings in this app are made by their own subject, in the moment, from your hands into theirs — which is the cleanest version of consent available — but the person holding the phone afterwards is holding somebody else’s voice.

Treat the export as what it is. A backup file is a corpus of other people’s voices. It is encrypted with a passphrase you choose, it is not a share-sheet action, and it is meant for moving to a new phone — not for sending to anyone.

On-device is not the same as private

The honest limit, stated plainly: this design stops us from being the leak. It does not stop the device from being one.

If any of those matter for the names you are keeping, keep fewer of them.

The site you are reading sets no cookies, runs no analytics and embeds no trackers. Web fonts are served by Google Fonts, which sees the request that fetches them.

Terms

sayyourname.app is published by Factory 333™, member of HeartBank®. The app is free. There is no subscription, no metered tier and nothing withheld pending payment.

You are responsible for the recordings you collect, including asking before you record and deleting anything somebody asks you to delete.

A full written retention-and-destruction schedule ships with the app, before the first release.
